Job Announcement: English (+ Fine Arts, & Philosophy) at Virginia Military Institute

Reshef Agam-Segal recently wrote in with this job announcement. The English department  at Virginia Military Institute is undergoing major changes, and starting next year it will take up under its purview English, Fine Arts, and Philosophy.

They are now hiring people for the new department: This may prove an excellent opportunity for OLP & Lit subscribers. Please see below for more details.

Multiple tenure-track positions, beginning August 2013, to teach in an English major that integrates fields in the humanities and the arts – rhetoric and writing, literature, fine arts, and philosophy – through a central focus on rhetorical studies.

We seek candidates who demonstrate a strong interest in engaging in the opportunities that an interdisciplinary department like ours presents for teaching, scholarly engagement, community outreach, and mentorship of students. Assistant or associate professor rank possible. Preference will be given to candidates with Ph.D. by August 2013, but ABDs will be considered.

Candidates must both fill out an on-line application at the Virginia jobs site and submit required supporting materials (a letter of application, résumé, official transcript, and three letters of recommendation) either by e-mail to or by mail to Dr. Emily Miller, Head, Department of English and Fine Arts, Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, VA 24450.

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the positions have been filled. Interviews via Skype and/or at CEA.

In a continuing effort to enrich its academic environment and provide equal educational and employment opportunities, VMI encourages women, minorities, disabled individuals and veterans to apply.

Virginia Military Institute is a state-supported undergraduate military college of engineering, the sciences, humanities, and the social sciences with a strong emphasis on teaching excellence.

Military experience is not required for faculty.

  1. Thanks for helping to spread the word! Anyone interested in applying for one of these positions should keep in mind that they are being advertised as positions in English (so expertise in fine arts or philosophy might be a plus, but is not the main thing being looked for), that the email address reflects the focus on rhetoric and composition (so people with expertise in that area of English will likely have a distinct advantage over others), and that interviews have already begun.

I hope this information helps people decide whether and how to apply, rather than putting anybody off. It would be wonderful if we could hire readers of this blog.

  2. Any other news on these searches? I applied but never heard anything from the department.

  3. I’m sorry you haven’t heard anything. The department should contact you, but if you have any questions you should probably contact them. What I know is that several hires have been made, and that the job ad seems no longer to be up at the VMI website. But for all I know there may be more hiring to be done. That might be why you haven’t heard anything definite yet. Reshef and I are not much involved in the search process, so we don’t have all the information you might want.
