I recently learned that Rei Terada (Comparative Literature, U.C. Irvine) published an essay on Wittgenstein in the Fall 2002 issue of Common Knowledge. The essay is entitled “Philosophical Self-Denial: Wittgenstein and the Fear of Public Language,” and I thought it would interest our readers. Prof. Terada directs the Critical Theory Emphasis at UCI, and is the author of Feeling in Theory: Emotion after the “Death of the Subject” (Harvard Univ. Press 2001) and Looking Away: Phenomenality and Dissatisfaction, Kant to Adorno (Harvard Univ. Press 2009).
