The blog The Immanent Frame has posted audio recordings of four talks delivered at an October 22 symposium held at Cooper Union, entitled “Rethinking Secularism.” The four lectures — about the place of religion in the public sphere — were given by Judith Butler, Jürgen Habermas, Charles Taylor, and Cornel West. We thought some of you would find these of interest. (I thank my colleague at Williams, Jim Nolan, for drawing this resource to my attention.)
Here are the paper titles:
- Jürgen Habermas: “‘The Political’ – The Rational Sense of a Questionable Inheritance of Political Theology“
- Charles Taylor: “Why We Need a Radical Redefinition of Secularism”
- Judith Butler: “Is Judaism Zionism? Religious Sources for the Critique of Violence”
- Cornel West: “Prophetic Religion and the Future of Capitalist Civilization”

The Immanent Frame has also posted audio (and a transcript) of the discussion between Habermas and Taylor at this event. To access that, click here.
